Hi,
Foam is not recommended for use with the Epics as it may get on the gaiter. The Epics stay on so well that you wouldn't even need to consider foaming.
I have been using my Epics without the heel strap and it has been working great. In order to do this successfully the Epic needs to fit snugly.
