Re: [RC] HELP! save my trees! - Barbara McCrary

If it were my problem, I would nail on one vertical slat on the tree, then nail on rabbit wire, folding the sharp edges under. Nail the wire onto the slat.....that will reduce the number of staples that would be driven into the tree. Nail the slat on with two nails, rather than numerous staples. Then nail the staples onto the slat. Rabbit wire is tough and has smaller grids than chicken wire. We have a barn beaver, and that surely stopped him from eating away the barn! Of course, we nailed the wire directly to the barn wall, but the slat principle will reduce the amount of iron going into the tree trunk.

I am trying to find a way to keep my horse from eating the 15 large trees in his 1/2 acre dry lot. He already has plenty of salt and hay so it shouldn't be nutritional, and I don't want to nail wire back on the trees because it breaks and leaves sharp edges. I can't fence the trees in because they are not in a cluster. I would use creosote if you could get it but, alas, it has gone the way of the dinosaurs. Is there any paint-on stuff that works and where do I but it? The local places around here don't sell anything like that because they say nothing works.
Thanks- Shelly
