Re: [RC] Ouch (Tight Rear Muscles) - rides2far

How does one avoid tight rear muscles when one comes
into a VC?

I think it happens more when you're riding your horse closer to his
limit...whether it be speed or distance, so having your horse in good
shape and then taking it easy may be all it takes to keep you out of the
danger zone. Other than that, throw a blanket over their rump when you
come in (unless it's really warm) and I think *gradually* gearing down
from your traveling speed helps. If I see the vet check far up ahead I'll
drop down from maybe 8 mph, to 5, then 4, not just come to an abrupt walk
but just gradually gear down, then walk the last little bit in. Only time
I've worried about it much is at the end of a 100. They're near their
limit as far as distance goes, and the air is usually getting cool. I'm
really careful to get a blanket on them and that is the one time I ride
with a rump rug...after dark when we've slowed down.
