Amen to that.  I would much rather not finish than look at a tired, 'just barely made it through' and spent horse.  He didn't chose to do this sport, I did, and I am responsible for whether or not he has fun, and ultimately for his health and soundness for the rest of his life.
 
BTW, I have seen very very few riders argue with the vet about being pulled, and I can tell you now that they would not be on my list as friends and riding companions if they did.
