Re: [RC] re: RP users - Lynne Glazer

Our druthers, and of course our horses' proclivities, gotta get the right gear for both. Neither of mine do the drop and spin, though they'll both do the "drop" spook in place mostly, one can do the 50 mph-to-zero-what's THAT?? spook while immediately trotting off as if nothing was wrong, the other's preference is the full-Arab-teleport, where she'd disappear from one side of the widetrack and reappear 6 feet immediately to the side, still at whatever speed we were traveling. When she was younger, she'd do the "scoot" type of spook, which was whiplash for her unfortunate rider with the bad neck.

The horse I bought from the feedlot (now 25!) had the drop and spin, she dumped many a rider with her quickness. Drop, spin and not go anywhere. <g> We'd howl with laughter, since we'd long since learned to stay on for it.

Learning to ride Mr. 50-to-zero was a challenge in a saddle with dressage type stirrup placement. How I yearned for my old cross- functional, with the slightly forward placement, wrong tree size for the Rubberband though. Recently I borrowed back that old saddle to ride the mare a few times, and to my surprise I now prefer the Summit with the legs right underneath. It's the bareback pad while she's pregnant again (soon I hope).

For what it's worth, the RPs come with any length billets one wants, the endurance comes standard with medium, but they can be replaced with dressage-length ones if the fixed thigh block is considered an impediment to raising the flap. The medium length billets were designed to be used with a girth which keeps the buckles well below the rider's legs, ideally where the whole body of the buckle is on the sweat flap and no higher. Perhaps a shorter girth is in order? I rode an endurance for a couple of years, and experience any trouble.

And, interestingly, that's my favorite thing on my endurance RP...those
solid thigh blocks make me very secure for the "drop and spin" discussed
