[RC] re; not dumb TWH question - Claire Nystrom

Let me preface this response by saying that I am not a TWH or gaited
horse expert. However, my parents own TWH's and Icelandics, so I have
learned a lot from them. Many gaited horse people advocate never
letting a horse trot and only allowing them to gait. From my
understanding, this can be very hard on them and you can actually use
the trot to develop more elasticity and develop their muscles fully
and to ease the strain on their backs that some of this gaiting
requires. Allowing the horse to trot will benefit their long term
soundness. Especially if they have been ridden in gait in an inverted
fashion. I recommend looking up Lee Ziegler's website for more info.
She has tons of fabulous articles on every gaited horse subject
imaginable. She also advocates riding the horse barefoot and using
gentle bits or even bitless bridles. Even though I don't own any
gaited horses, I read her site a lot and enjoy learning about the
subject.
