[RC] (not) Dumb TWH question/suggestion - Ridecamp Guest

==========================================

  I'm less sure I know anything about gaits than I used to be! Well
anyway,here's my thought: I doubt many of the TWH's described as "trotting" are
trotting;probably they are pacing. I am also skeptical that many are ever
going to both trot AND pace.Those are the two extremes/opposites of the timing
range. I have ridden probably a hundred different TWH's,and none has ever done
what I call a trot-which I identify as "that pony gait I can't ride!".
Virtually all of them delivered some gait from the pace side of the timing
range.(The stepping pace timing is overwhelmingly what you encounter,and it is
definitly what the show TWH people have bred for.) If I had one that was
really pacey,I would try not to let him do it.I would run him barefoot in the
back if possible-which it generally is- and shod in the front.This is the
shoeing set up found on most field trial horses,and it will move the timing of
the hooves (slightly)away from the pace and (toward) the center(Running
walk)timing;the result will generally be the stepping pace timing.Enjoy!
