At what stage of shoeing do you guys prefer your horse to be at for doing a
ride? One week ? Two weeks ? Will you do a ride on a horse that is say four
weeks into a shoeing ? What about six weeks ?

It depends on the ride, and the horse and how their feet have grown. Sometimes they can go longer than others, depends on the time of year and all sorts of other variables that can enter the picture. I've done rides on horses 6 weeks into a shoeing, and other times I wouldn't have gone to a ride 4 weeks into a shoeing so had them reshod. I usually like for them to be about 2 to 3 weeks into a cycle, but it doesn't always work out that way so it all depends on how their feet look. I had Rocky shod on the 14th and he is going to need to be redone this weekend for Schellbourne because his feet have grown a lot in that time. Some horses can go longer than others too, for most of Rocky's career he was reshod at more frequent intervals than the others. He never went 6 weeks, and very seldom even 5. It made things rather complicated having each horse on a different schedule, but that hasn't been a problem since my husband went to farrier school. Now he likes that they aren't all due on the same weekend.

We're going to see if the two barefoot horses need anything done this weekend. So far it's been since March and they have kept their feet worn down enough that I've only had to file the edges to keep them rolled and smooth. I kind of like being able to do that myself, with supervision of course (I don't want to screw anything up). It is working very well having those two horses barefoot and using Epics for riding. I don't need to worry anymore about a schedule with those horses, which is quite nice.
