Thanks, Barbara!  My gelding is really sore after our last
race.  He was really extending his trot for a long time, which he
rarely does at home.  You may have saved him a future injury...

I would add to that that doing the same of ANYTHING for an extended period
of time is a recipe for injury.  One reason I like to take green horses on
tough rides is because the terrain forces one to use different muscle
groups and move in different ways over and over again, instead of going
the same speed at the same gait, same, same, same for mile after mile.  If
one has to take a less-than-seasoned horse on a flatter ride, one must be
even more cognizant of changing up from time to time to give muscle groups
a break.
