[RC] Prineville, Injured riders and horses - Jonni

So yes he's a intact male, it helps him stay in better natural shape and
racing is easier then if he were gelded<<<

I was confused by this logic too, but maybe they can race better, as
everyone gives the horse a wide berth......

I had a Cryptorchid horse. At 4, when we got him, he acted like a normal
gelding. By the time he was almost 6, he was HORRIBLE. His stallion like
behavior was much worst than a stallion. A blood test confirmed the wayward
testicle. (we had been told he had a normal gelding process) He talked to
any horse, mare or gelding, and would "show off his wears" at the drop of a
hat. He could not be turned out with the other geldings, and when a mare
got in to his pen, he bred her. They can be much different (and more
difficult) to manage that a full intact stallion. We finally found a vet who
could go in with the laparoscope, and find the wayward testicle. It was way,
way up near his abdomen, and about the size of a grapefruit. Poor boy, along
with the confused signals his body was sending his brain, I wonder if the
darn thing hurt. The day after it was removed, I had my nice gelding back.

Of course, I see no logic personally to keep ANY horse a stallion unless it
is something darn spectacular that would benefit the horse world with its
off spring. Jonni
