[RC] AHA - Donna Coss

The European breeders were very serious about their pedigrees and the business of horse breeding. Their documentation is without peer! When one reads 200 year old stud books that have been treasured and protected through wars, civil strife, communist takeovers etc. one realizes that the recording of pedigrees is viewed as a sacred trust! I do not want anyone to get the idea that European pedigrees should be suspect! The U.S. should keep such careful records!

Pedigrees are not only recorded at State Stud farms, but everyone who is a horse breeder will bring out and show the records, their farm, has compiled through generations of horses. And it is done with the greatest pride! They love to talk about their horses, with an emphasis on performance. They talk about their horses and know them as well or better then they know their human ancestors!

When traveling to countries like Hungary where the horse was king and Stud farms and their personnel are treated with the utmost respect, one gains a tremendous admiration for the people involved in the preservation and breeding of superior horses.

I had the opportunity to visit what we would call a large county fair. The farmers showed their animals in suits and ties and the breeding of these animals is considered a great and admirable art. Quite a contrast to the county fair atmosphere in the U.S. There is respect from farmer to farmer, but the general public only cares about the manure on their feet!

P.S. Another reminder--IF these SA horses contained "shagya" blood -- remember that the Shagya although, a separate breed, is still 100% purebred Arabian for at least 200 years. The Shagya can only breed out to Arabian, the rest is performance tested, conformation inspected, call them super Arabians!!
