I guess I don't understand what's the problem with clover. other than
causing a bad case of the 'slobbers' early in the summer, clover is a
pretty good food for horses, in moderation.

Depends on what kind of clover.  Some can cause sufficient clotting
disruption to cause pretty severe hemorrhage, and even death if there is
some other extenuating circumstance.  The mare I rode so many miles back
in the 80s lost her first foal due to clover-induced hemorrhage...
