[RC] Time off before 100's - sherman

I was browsing through the Decade Team stories, and saw that several decade team riders give their horses time off, maybe 2 or 3 weeks, prior to a 100 mile ride, and then 2-4 weeks off after as well. Can anyone with years of experience with 100's, tell me if this usually complete time off, with only pasture turn-out, or, are the horses usually still ridden lightly. We (daughter & I) are planning our first 100 in July (Tevis), and don't want to overtrain and go with  worn out horses, but we do want them to be fit enough to handle it.
Thanks much,
Kathy
