[RC] sleeping in the gooseneck/to tie or not - Lucy Chaplin Trumbull

We got a "bare bones" Trails West gooseneck a couple
of years ago and have been working on it as we go
along to make it into a "living quarters" trailer.

I put up some pics, explaining what we did:

Whoever it was asked about giving their horse more
space to travel in by removing the divider - I did
that for years in my two-horse straight load trailer -
still tied the horse facing forwards, but gave it more
space so it could slant itself or travel straight.
When I've followed the trailer and watched the horse
in this configuration, he usually travelled about in
the middle - neither straight nor slanted.

In our new trailer the back stall is big, so again
the horse can pick how he/she wants to stand. Whilst,
as Candace says, some horses like to brace against a
divider or wall, my youngster, Zini can't figure that
out and starts to scramble in a small space, so she's
much happier having the whole back stall to fidget in.

As for tying or not. If you tie, the horse won't be
able to cough properly and could choke (unless you
tie long, in which case the horse is guaranteed to
get a leg over the tie <g>); while if you don't
tie, the horse could be in the process of turning
around right when you have to slam on the brakes in
an emergency and be in the wrong place at the wrong
time. Either way, you can't win.
