[RC] Thanks for advice on Yearling Mouthiness - Rosalie Marley

Hi All -

Thanks for suggestions (public and private) on my "mouthy yearling".

Gelding is not an option right now, although if I don't get him sold by
autumn, I will geld him then. There are a limited number of stallions in
my breed and he has the "right stuff", though not for my program. If
someone looking to breed is interested, I don't want take away that option.
If no one is interested, well, "good stallions make great geldings"!

However, as some people pointed out, gelding doesn't always help, and I had
a client's mare who was one of the more vicous biters I had ever been
around. Since both of this colt's parents are calm and don't bite, I don't
think he has to keep this behaviour.

He is turned out with a couple of very pregnant mares. They are awfully
tolerant and other than a few scrapes on his butt and back the first couple
of days, they don't reprimand him much.

I did get a suggestion to have a blunt pointed object positioned so that he
would get that before he got to me, or to have some nasty thing handy (like
a hot baked potato) to stuff in his mouth. I'll save those options for
later if I need them.

Swatting him on the mouth doesn't work! (oops tried that a few times) I
did try the "noodling on the mouth" and he seems to treat it like a game.
I'm not adverse to swatting him and I don't get all loveydovey emotional
(not sure where somebody got that idea). Thanks to folks for reminding me
that they get reprimanded by herdmates on the body! I tried that and he
seems to be improving. I also reviewed some Clinton Anderson "respect"
work and think that will help as he constantly invades my space.

Thanks for your help!
Rosalie
