I used to tell the kids, ask politely and when they don't let you by the first or second chance, when  a place comes up just yell "on your right (or left) and go....It's their problem then.  When we used to be on a single track and someone was "dying" to get by, you just stop on the trail as close as you can get to the hill side and tell them fine, go by, but you pass on the drop off side.  Most will get the idea and not try.......mb
