[RC] Help! Kinda sorta stupid question about lateral flexion/one rein stop. - Amy Anglin

OK... please help me.  I started riding before I could read and was trained by a mare who made sure I knew how to turn her in a circle to make her stop before we did anything else.  My crazy father put me on his HOT saddlebred mare and said "Go to it - turn her in a circle if she tries to bring you back to the barn, eat grass, run away. etc."  I was dizziest 6 year old ever.

So, the other day, a new friend of mine asked me if I knew how to "double" a horse, as we rode our first pleasure trail ride together.

I said "No. What the heck is that?"  She looked all worried for a moment and then showed me how to turn a horse in a circle using one rein...the rein inside the circle.... i.e., how to turn a horse in a circle to make it stop as explained to me at 6 years old. And I said "OH, you mean How to turn the horse in a circle!... Of course, first thing I ever learned."

My kinda sorta stupid question is:  Is this what you mean by lateral flexion and the one rein stop??  Or is there something else I should know about it??

I'm so confused, please let me know if I'm going to be OK if I still turn my horse in a circle, or if I need to learn lateral flexion and the one rein stop instead.

Thanks,

Amy
