Re: [RC] Marguerite Henry - Tiffany D'Virgilio

I loved all those books, but Black Gold was the best. I was always reminded of that as Go For Wand broke her leg and struggled to continue down the stretch in the Breeder's cup. It was so hideous to watch, that mare wanting to run with her leg flapping like that. So, I guess the same quote applies to that gallant mare as well.

Yes Laurie--
I guess since I wear tights a significant amount of the time, I'm confident enough in my manhood to admit I read Marguerite Henry's books.
King of the Wind, Misty of Chincoteague, Stormy--Misty's Foal, and the one that moved me the most, Black Gold. This one ended much like
the Black Stallion, but with a twist-- Black Gold was racing, and winning, but in the home stretch, he broke his leg, but finished nonetheless. I'll never forget the last quote of the book. The
race track announcer says that the horse had broken his leg and had to be destroyed, but that he finished the race. "On three legs and a heart, he finished." Silly as it may seem, that quote may have, at a very early age for me, lit the flame of respect for the idea that "To finish is to win." I shall go wear purple now.
