Old sponges fall apart, and the mesh helps the sponges last longer. I keep the sponge attached to the breastcollar to keep the saddle dry after using the sponge. I saw some nice mesh bags at Academy too. They were actually portable pack bags (like duffel bags, etc.) and were inside of a mesh bag with a nice drawstring.
