[RC] Registering Cash cloned Colt with AHA - Ridecamp Guest

==========================================

I would say that the clone *is* registerable with the AHA.

The cloned foal's "X" chromasome came from the same dam as
Cash, and his "Y" chromasome came from the same sire as
Cash... so the foal is registerable under the AHA using the
same pedigree as Cash, *and* a DNA test will prove that.
The dam used for the cloned colt is the same as an embryo
transfer...

.. ***EXCEPT*** ... that her egg was used. Therefore,
while the nucelous and the DNA of the resulting zygote
match Cash, the mitochondrial DNA is *not* the same.

This could be a really big deal (think strong female tail
line and broodmare sires) for any resultant foal. Mitochondrial
DNA is suspected to have a lot to do with how efficiently
each cell is able to move energy, nutrients, etc. across the
cell membranes... which could have a *whole lot* to do with
how efficiently an Endurance horse operates. Thus, it may
be that the clone would not be nearly the same Endurance
horse as Cash.

HOWEVER, if you were to breed your mare to this clone, the mitochondrial DNA of
your foal would be that of your mare
(since the clone will only donate an "X" or "Y" chromasome)
so your foal would not be inheriting Haflinger mitochondrial
DNA (unless you cloned a filly, in which case any foal she produced would have
Haflinger mitochondrial DNA, but I digress...).

The AHA does not check mitochondrial DNA in their DNA testing
for parentage... only chromosomal DNA. Thus, the DNA testing
will show that the foal is a result of the same sire and dam
as Cash and thus the foal *is* registerable with the AHA using
his same pedigree as a full blooded Arabian sire since the AHA
is concerned with pedigrees and where the chromasomes came from.

ps... "Thoroughbred" is a breed. "Pure bred" is a horse of
a specific breed and not a "hybrid", or a cross of different
breeds.
pps... bonus question: how did they know the foal would be
a colt and not a filly?
