Think about having an appendicitis attack before the invention of anestetics, which allowed abdominal surgery. When the first total anestetic (chloroform) was invented, there were many who argued that pain was God given and part of "Gods plan" and it was immoral to use it. Doctors knew all about how to diagnose appendicitis, but all they could do was tell the family to get the priest or preacher and start arranging the funeral. The patient would almost surely be dead in 3 days. I can't remember exactly when anestetic was invented, but it was about 150 yrs ago. Wendy was only in the hospital with her appendicitis one day last fall. Not a great difference.
