Since 1997 the rides have been held at the Circle Bar Ranch, 20 miles South of Ashland, Montana. The rides loop through the Stevens' property and long out into the Custer National Forest. Much of the course passes interesting rock formations and follows Native American trails and game trails.. No part of the trail is paved. The National Championship includes a 100-mile and a 50-mile ride.

Fort Howes Endurance Ride offers an excellent venue for those that are new to the sport of distance riding as well as those that are veteran riders. Rich in history, the trails wind through the Custer National Forest and privately owned land. Base camp is located on a working cattle ranch that has been in the family since 1883.
