Here's another good reason to wear gaiters.... a good friend of mine did a lot of mountain biking. He wore gaiters. One day, he was on a narrow brushy path and a rattlesnake struck as he pedaled past. The snake's fangs hooked into his gaiters (not his leg thank goodness) and the snake was stuck. Richard was afraid to stop pedaling, so he raced in terror to the ranger's station and pedaled around (with the snake flopping along) until the ranger came out and helped get rid of the snake.
