Re: [RC] rider weight - belinda romanuski

I have had horses most of my life. However there was a period of close to 7
years that due to family issues I was horseless. I gained quite a few
pounds. My weight soared to 230. I did not own a horse until I lost 50
pounds. My main trail horse is a 24 year old standardbred that I have owned
for 4 years. His average weight is 900#. When you add up my weight,
saddle, and other items I take along like treats for the horse, my lunch, a
raincoat, etc. it is still over the 20%. He moves along just fine. I think
his early training on the track helped him to have strong bones and we
purchased him from a riding stable where he was working 6 days a week for 7
hours a day. I will not allow any adult who does not know how to ride get
on him. Yes 180# is 180#. But it is easier to carry a 50# child than a 50#
bag of grain. A person who does not have a good seat is just dead weight.
I still think it is an individual thing with a horse. I have managed to
keep my weight where it is because I do not want my horses to carry much
more, even though they probably could without any trouble.

Subject: [RC] rider weight

I was glad someone finally posted a message suggesting that some of these
"tubbies" lose some weight. When I switched from a 15.2, 1100 Arab/Mustang
to an 800 lb. 14.2 horse, I promised him that I would lose 10 lbs. and I
did just that. He is happier, my heart is happier, I feel a lot better and
I can again do a step class w/o killing my knees! When I am riding behind
some of you and I see all that fat hanging over the saddle, it is a real
eye opener and I feel really sorry for the horses.
