i know this is an old question...but here is what we do for the dips and holes that get worn into the ground around gates and feeders.  We lay down DG (decomposed granite).  There is lots of it here in Nevada and it works well without any ill effects on the horses.

Hi: It may not scald their hooves ,BUT if it get's on their hair(skin) it WILL cause the color to Bleach out forever.

My Dad is wanting to dump a bunch of lime in the massive mudhole in front of the pen gates.  Is this a bad thing to do around horses?  Can it scald their hooves?
