There are two way it can benefit when the saddle is off. First is the setup Ed descirbed which I have also The nice thing about that is you can leave it on for the check and it won't interfer with the horse and you can monitor how he is recovering and if he is not you will know that something might be brewing prior to going back out.

The other options is the hand held units.
