Re: [RC] Mud and More Mud - Chris Paus

I did just that a few years ago. Got a dump truck load
of sand and filled in my worst mud holes. It worked
great for a couple of years, but our Kansas clay just
seems to eat the sand! I need to do it again. Told my
hubby I wanted another truck load of sand for
Christmas, but I didn't get it, dang.

I learned "the secret" of mud control at a local

think, by the Oregon Department of Land Conservation
and Development .
A local horse breeder had been doing lots of
experiments with different
drainage systems and the one that worked the best
was SAND. Yep, just
sand. Now you have to run off, of course and you
can't feed on it. so
you have to work that out, BUT if you take a paddock
sized plot of land
with good natural drainage, you scrape off the mud
(in the summer, of
course) and then lay down 6"+ of sand, you won't get
mud. And you keep
them off any land were you want to grow grass.

I have not done it yet, but I sure would like to.

keep them in corals and everything works out well

a

deal with muddy corals.
Logically, I would think mixing truck loads of
gravel in with the soil
might help but I have no idea if the gravel would
do more harm then
good.
If you have had a similar problem and were able to
fix it, I would
appreciate the benefit of your experience.
Thanks, Bob
