Cheap tack from India and Pakastan is stitched with cotton thread.  Good tack is stitched with nylon thread.  Good old tack is stitched with linen thread.  None of these should be attacked by oil or oil soap.
 
I suspect that in the examples you had the stitches had worn through long ago and the pieces were held together by the glue, which was water soluble and came apart due to the soaking.  Leather is normally glued before sewing.  It makes it easier to sew and adds strength.
 
In my repair I use contact cement then hand sew.  The contact cement (the kind used to put kitchen counters tops on) should hold up to oil soap.
