Re: [RC] training question - Chris Paus

It's called reading the horse. You have to know the
horse well enough to know whether it's time to move
forward or time to slow down with training....

My young Arab mare has been lightly under saddle for a
year.. we are taking it slowly in that I haven't asked
her to canter yet, but moving along in that we've done
solo and group trail rides, road rides and she's been
in situations that tested her ability to handle some
stresses.

I've had other horses in this stage of their training
that I wouldn't ask of them the things I've asked of
Ali.. different horses, different temperaments.
sometimes it's hard to determine. I do a lot of riding
and training by gut feel, so I can't give you a set
answer for how to know when. The horse will tell you
if it is bored or if you are asking too much too soon.

Hey all,

If a horse is performing well in the early stages of
training, such as calm and accepting of the bit, is
there any problem in moving right along in the
training? Is it more important to move slowly even
the if the horse seems perfectly calm or to move a
little more quickly so as not to bore the horse?

Thanks,
Ashley
