Re: [RC] Clipping - Susan Young

If you didn't clip back in October, I wouldn't do it now.  Their winter coats will soon be shedding; clipping now will mess up their spring/summer coats.

In addition to endurance, I also fox hunt.  All of my guys are out 24/7 and the most I will do is a trace clip in October...when the winter coat is first coming out.  It's more work to keep my horses cooled off during endurance rides or hunts, but a lot less work and worry all the rest of the time.

We've had hard freezes here in OK and I'm not close enough to run check on the horses very often.  Of course, you have to consider your circumstances.  If clipping is a viable alternative for you, I'd suggest you do so next October.

You guys are great!  Here?s another subject ? Do you clip for the winter?  I am just stated training again. Last year I just did a small trace clip.  The horses are out 24/7 with the choice to stand in their stalls.  I have been blanketing to cool them down ? Jack who gets sweaty from work and Star gets sweaty from running around like an idiot while we are gone.  Now, at least Star has gotten used to being left behind, so she only runs a little when we take off and when we get back and doesn?t need to be blanketed.  Is it better to clip Jack now so he doesn?t get so hot while riding.  I am new to endurance so these were things I never had to think about before.
