Re: [RC] Understanding Mares - Lysane Cree

Is it a mare thing to be mean and obnoxious with
strangers? Mine is. If someone (other than me) tries
to pet her she will pin her ears back. Even people
that she is around fairly regularly. She has learned
that I do not tolerate kicking or biting, but she has
tried to nip other people that pet her or pass by her
while she is on the cross-ties. It seems that she
knows that other people will probably not do anything
and if I am not near by I can't do anything.
It seems that she is a boss mare, but being the
youngest at the barn, she is not boss mare out in the
field. We definitely both have strong opinions in any
case. She has learned to accept that I am the boss
mare but it doesn't mean that she doesn't challenge
me. :)
She has taken her mean and obnoxious thing to the
point of cowkicking the vet (luckily she missed by a
1/2") when he tried to listen to her gut sounds (she
had mild colic) - of course she had a bad experience
with the vet at 8 months old and has yet to forget
that (she's 2 now). I am working on it still.
Recently she kicked someone at the barn. I wasn't
there so I don't know what happened - she has never
kicked "for no reason", she has only kicked when she
didn't like what someone did to her. But the lady said
that my horse stopped in her tracks and deliberately
nailed her. I don't know...this lady also has a
tendency to smack horse's butts as they go out the
door to the pasture.
I love my mare and I look forward to riding her,
opinions and all. :)

Lysane
