Oh, forgot to mention. We do have ours plugged into Ground Fault interupters. Both out outside outlets have them.

Some friends of mine lost a lovely young mare to this issue. She blythely chomped on a fan cord. The electricity stopped her heart instantly. Lynn found her in the stall laying just as she had slid down the wall.

PVC works fine. You can also use electrical conduit.
