There is a solar water trough that is supposed to keep water from 
freezing down to twenty below.  Living in Vermont, I would 
believe it when I see it.  Sometimes our HIGH is ten below.  
Right now we haven't been above the freezing mark since Jan 4 
and ten degrees feels warm.  Even with that, we have had a 25 
mile ride and drive (hottest day this month, 27) and two sleigh 
rallies.  Sleigh rallies are supposed to be cold so we can wear all 
of our grandmothers furs!
I am currently using a 1/5 hp circulating pump to keep a 100 
gallon tank ice free and it works just great.  The heat from the 
motor warms the water and the movement prevents any icing.  
Much more economical than a water heater and the horses like it 
better.
