RE: [RC] [RC] Weight division question answer - Nancy Mitts

It wouldn't hurt to point out here that the weight minimum must be met, no matter where AERC will record the points. So if the registered HW person losing weight after June 1 continues to ride, and AERC will not change their weight division, their "points" are actually for nothing if they do not carry the minimum weight in some fashion. A rider's weight may be challenged at any time by another rider. So if someone riding HW is challenged at a ride & weighs only 200#, and it's past the date to change divisions, they would have to be disqualified. Someday, this will happen to someone who is placing in a division and be a real mess. Of course there would be no way to go back and "prove" their weight at previous rides.
Even if someone isn't going for points, the placement they take in a particular weight division affects the points of the other riders. Even if they are not a member of AERC they "take" the points from their particular placement in a weight division. Monte won the Central Region HW 5 times and 2nd place 4 times (9 years straight) even though he would be near the pack of the ride. So, this does affect everyone in the ride, even at the back of the pack.
I have tried to point out in the past the potential problems with the way the office has been doing this, but no one else seemed to see a problem. Actually I'll bet most of the riders don't even know this is really happening. The people who do change weight divisions part way through the year are taking their points already accrued with them from one weight division to another. This would/should change the points for everybody in every ride they have done in that weight division, as well as the division they are changing into.

Let's say you were a MW and then lost weight do you change to
a LW?
***** Only if you cross the boundary from MW to LW with all your tack. If you did - you need to notify the AERC office before June 1. You can change your weight division(and region) up to that date. After that date your weight division can't be changed again until the next ride season starts on Dec. 1. If you are a HW on June 1 and lose 100 lbs - all your results for the rest of the season will still be entered as HW.

Obviously it is advantages to be a light middle weight if you are going
for points or whatever, but what about the everyday rider who finishes at the
back. Does it really matter?"

***** No in my view...
