RE: [RC] [RC] weight devision question - heidi

Oddly enough, you needed more points to hit the top 10 heavyweight in
the NW this year than top 10 middleweight.

Yes, that was interesting... But of course, it is also apples and
oranges--in order to earn MW points, you had to beat the MWs. But to earn
HW points, you only had to beat the HWs. What was odd, though--and I just
went back and double-checked--at the one-day rides, my HW placing was
considerably higher than what my placing would have been if I'd've been a
MW. But on the multiday rides, the HWs really came out of the woodwork
and there were hardly ANY MWs--I'd've placed higher as a MW!

I think it's only fair - I couldn't hit the minimum FEI weight even if I
starved myself for 3 months and rode bareback. Weight matters a lot. I
watched my horse pull the best CRIs I've ever seen (44/40)after carrying
a 70# junior. It shows up when I BC - even with the weight adjustment, I
still lose on CRI. Of course it also doesn't help that Laser figures
that after the ride is done it is time for a nap, and he doesn't look
too flashy at the 1 hour check.

Funny, the horses I've ridden it doesn't seem to matter who they are
packing or how much they weigh--if they are good recoverers and get good
CRIs, they do it packing big guys or little flyweight kids. And I've
never seen the HW guys that are really fit and really good riders have any
problem running up front. Being short, I often pondered about the
"actual" weight carried over a distance when I rode my horse every step of
the way and some HW guy was off running half the ride. Big tall guys that
are long-legged and can cover ground can do that--some of us not-so-tall
folks can't keep up with our horses if we get off, so they pack us the
entire distance. Never did seem quite equitable to me that we contend
that "weight matters" when there is no standard for whether or not the
weight is even on the horse!
