RE: [RC] talk about reactionary - Stephanie E Caldwell

good "GP" vets will do the same thing, and refer you to other vets who
are really "up" on one field or another.

And I think it's unfair to put vets down if you're not using someone who
specializes in what you need. I've always asked my vets that, and even
though they don't advertise a certain specialty all the time most
usually have a specialty.

That's the main problem with folks who "push" one method or another,
without a good overview.

All the more reason to have both a vet and a farrier on board, both of
which are willing to work as a team.

And sometimes you have to learn that the hard way. I've went through
many farriers over the past four years before finding my current one.
He's a great farrier with a good working relationship with my lameness
vet. He had me do X-rays before he shod her, lateral views of all 4 to
get her bones where they belonged and he had me do them again when he
thought she'd had laminitis, and there was no rotation, thankfully. He
watches her move after she's trimmed and after he tacks the shoes on to
make sure she's "right". And, he's not much more than my old farrier who
was just a good 'ole boy from around here.

Bingo. A GOOD farrier will know when it is beneficial to be barefoot
and
when it is not--and will have much more than one method in his/her
repertoire...

Yep! He shoes mothers horse and leaves mine barefoot. He's shod Shogun
in two "styles" because he got a knee injury and needed the pressure
taken off his knee. He's a TWH and his gait wasn't as good in the NBS
shoes but his knee healed nicely. I thought it was very good that he
would do what was better for the horse vs what makes him gait best.
