Re: [RC] Wildlife encounters - Maryanne Gabbani

The wildest life I've encountered on the trails around here could probably throw any horse for a loop. For about a month or so starting in April we have mulberry season. Some of the mulberry trees are enormous and thick with wide green leaves. The first few times we trot under a tree that immediately breaks out in hoots of laughter and about 8 small voices, even my trail-savvy, camel-ignoring veterans are taken aback. It's common for the village children to climb up into the trees to harvest mulberries, which they do fairly quietly (how can you shriek with mulberries in your mouth anyway?) until we ride up.

Note to self: take all the horses out on the trail WITHOUT clients for the first ride of mulberry season.
