Re: [RC] Riding amoungst wildlife - Chris Paus

Good one Julie. When I lived in Wisconsin, we had to
deal with porkies a lot. In Kansas, we don't have
them...

One of my favorite horse and critter experiences was
on my first distance ride... a baby CTR of 15 miles
(looking back, I thought I rode a 100 mileer that day,
LOL)

Anyway, Star and I had to climb what looked from a
distance, like a grassy hill. When you got closer, it
was a grass covered cliff! A bunch of us sat at the
bottom wondering how we were going to get up that
thing on horseback. Well, Star took charge, and
charged up that. I just grabbed mane, closed eyes and
hung on for dear life.

When we got to the top, we both were so exhilirated at
the feat and full of ourselves, we galloped across the
top of the bluff. This was in the Flint Hills... if
anyone went to the ROC in Kansas, then you know the
kind of terrain I'm talking about.

As we were galloping along, I realized there was a
critter in front of us, Star was going to fast to slow
him down, we became airborne and STar jumped over the
critter. As we were in the air, I looked down and
realized we were leaping over a SKUNK! We were moving
too fast to get sprayed, but I hollered back to the
other riders. NObody got sprayed that day, but it was
the first and I hope last time I'll ever leap a skunk
on horseback!

Okay, I've got a story to tell, since no one has
come up with a story
about this particular critter:

Several years ago, on a training ride with kids and
friends, we were
galloping up a LONG hill (about 2 miles) which was
part of our 15 mile
loop. As usual, I ended up in the lead, and coming
arund a curve, ran
right over a young porcupine! He rolled over and
over as I stopped,
then he trundled off into the brush.

I got off my horse, and threw rocks into the brush
behind him, trying
to get him to come back into sight, my son caught
up, stopped and asked
me what I was doing. I told him what was up, and he
looked at me in
total shock, saying "Mom! Are you nuts!" and
promptly hid behind me!
*grin*

The porcupine made his appearance, and we got a good
look at the cute
little bugger before he trundled off again. He
didn't come back out
when the other riders caught up.
