Re: [RC] Riding amongst wildlife (Mule vs Mountain Lion) - Karen Ellis

Yes, but did you see the leg-hold trap on the cougar? It made me feel sick.

I wished there was a way to post photos on RC. I was
just forwarded an amazing series of photos of a mule
attacking and killing a mountain lion.

Photo 1: The mule has the mountain lion by the tail
and is flipping the lion over the mules head in the
air. You can see the mule still has the saddle, curb
bit and reins. The big cat is still alive.

Photo 2: The mule has the mountain lion by the neck
and is flipping it again. Cat looks to still be
barely alive.

Photo 3: The mountain lion is on the ground and the
mule is stomping on it with both front feet. The big
cat looks dead at this point. There are two dogs in
the background sitting back watching the mule's
attack. I guess they figured the mule had the
situation well in hand.

Photo 4: The mule is down on its knees in the front
biting the mountain lion around the neck. The
intensity of the mule is astonishing. It is clear it
intended to kill the cougar.

Here is the caption that was forwarded with the
photos:

"These pictures came from Arizona. Yes the Mule,
killed the mountain lion. The lion had been stalking
them for the better part of the morning, on the way
out to a hunt. They were pretty sure it was after a
dog. The cat Apparently ambushed them, and the mule
pictured tossed its rider and went into attack
(defense) mode, the horses scattered. Unfortunately,
the battle was decently long, and it wasn't until it
was almost over that one of the guys started snapping
pictures."

Speaking with one of our neighbors this summer he said
he saw a mountain lion cut across our pasture. He
said all four horses were on "point". I'm not sure
our Walkers would be as aggressive as the mule.
Fortunately the lion kept on going into the Army Corp
of Engineers land next to our place. We haven't seen
the mountain lion since but this week we lost our last
laying hen. Cougar, Coyote, Bob Cat, or Dog
somethings been visiting the hen house at night.

Cheers, Pete
