RE: [RC] [RC] horse feet - Jeanie Bartson

My favorite hoof site is: http://www.thehorseshoof.com (Quote from the
site--"The Strasser Method(TM) was developed by Dr. Hiltrud Strasser, a
licensed German veterinarian who has been researching the causes and
cures of equine lameness for over 20 years. She has discovered the
simple truth: the overwhelming majority of our horses' problems are due
to their unnatural lifestyle and unnatural hoof shape!")
I recently took the front shoes off my 9 year old mare-(this is a good
time of year to do that here in Calif since the ground is soft). Her
rear shoes I took off in June and she did fine. I kept her front shoes
on until now--upon removing them I found out she had, over the course of
a month or two, developed a slight absess under her shoe which the
farrier failed to tell me about. No wonder she was acting achy!! It
was an $85 for a trim and 2 front shoes every 6 weeks- but now I will
only trim her every 4 weeks or so and pay $40 until I learn how to do it
myself.
The absess would have gotten worse and could have lead to other issues.
If you read up on the hoof it is amazing the importance of the pumping
action built into the physiology of the horse's hoof anatomy. I think
by opening up the hoof and not deadening it with a shoe, it will help
her overall health and attitude. I will be able to do the trimming once
I take the classes and buy (omigosh) Some trimming tools...and easy
boots.
I hope others will share their stories. My next purchase is some sort
of easy boot--if anyone has any suggestions on what they use I would be
grateful! Also my horse's Christmas present is a bitless bridle so any
thoughts on that are encouraged!!
I will search the archives on this as well--but new info
wonderful...It's hard to keep up with all of you!--I have been too busy
reading all these emails (and researching how in the world Howard
allegedly "killed" horses??!!) I am a newby and want to learn all I
can~~even if it is about peoples mistakes- goodness knows I have made
enough.
Gratefully and respectfully,
Jeanie ~another!--call me jeanieB! :-)
PS. Happy holidays and thanks for being so wonderfully informative,
supportive AND patient- this is my first post.
