Re: [RC] Ways to power a horse trailer? - Sisu West Ranch

"...about golf
cart batteries?..."

Yes, they are deep cycle batteries. The last time I looked they were 6 V., you put 2 in series to make 12 V. Note they may be 12 V now.

"...The lights in my trailer already
work when the trailer is unhooked so I am guessing some ..."

They are drawing power from some battery. If there is not a large deep cycle installed somewhere, they are hooked up to the emergency breakaway battery that is supposed to power the electric brakes if the hitch breaks. If that battery hasn't been discharged by their use, it must be hooked up with an automatic recharger, but I'd have to look at things to be sure.

How to wire:

You need either a solid state "battery isolator" or a relay. This is hooked to the hot lead from the truck alternater. It stops the trailer batteries from trying to start the truck, and the truck battery from trying to run the trailer lights. From the isolater, you need a fuse or circuit breaker, and a heavy wire back to the trailer connector. This wire runs to the trailer battery/ lights.

You can buy the units from RV stores. Most come with a diagram. The RV place will wire things up if you don't know how. Many people have more trouble with electricity than other things. You could mount the batteries on the trailer and then hire an RV place to do the wiring.
