RE: [RC] Re. calcitonin - Mcgann, Barbara

I don't believe it would be a problem with short term ingestion.

Just like you can feed extra alfalfa on ride day, the horse should be OK with
high calcium water if hes using it. The way I understand it, and I am truly a
laymen here...is that the long term ingestion of high calcium levels puts their
body to sleep. They have way too much ca so they go to storing it. Then when
the body is stressed and calling for more calcium, they can't produce it
quickly. I am paraphrasing what the vets have tried to explain to me. This
is the same reasoning that goes with the suggestion that you feed grass hay up
until a day or so ahead of the ride, and then feed alfalfa at the ride.

We had hundreds of blood tests done. Our horses showed a terrible imbalance in
their ca/phos and ca/potassium ratios. For instance, if ca/phos is supposed to
be 3 to 1 or even 2 to 1, our ratios were 8 to 1. We would change feeds for
several weeks and retest. Same #'s. Add supplements and retest. Same #'s.
When we finally changed the water, voila, our horses ratios are down to 3 to 1.

Finally had our water tested, it was super high in CA. (don't have the test
results here, so can't quote #'s). We had a water softener installed on our
horse lines. That was the magical bullet. Have not had a tie-up since and
we have had at least 5 horses competing from our ranch since. None of them
have had one slight problem.-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Sooo, the water being high in CA affected the horses' ability to utilize CA
right? So, if you happened to go to a ride that had well water that was high in
CA that wouldn't cause a problem short term, right?
