Re: [RC] how long to keep hay - heidi

Does hay lose nutrients after a certain period of time? Specifically,
oat hay that has been clean and dry, but is over a year old. Is it
okay to feed to horses?

Dede, it is "ok" to feed, but yes, some nutrients do deteriorate over
time. Vitamin A is the one that seems to go the fastest. Because of
that, I hate to see old hay be the ONLY feed source--but it would be fine
as a supplement to pasture, or with a good vitamin supplement. Or if you
get fresh bright new hay, feed up the old hay along with it, while the
levels are still high in the new hay.
