[RC] LD/Endurance - k s swigart

Hope Lundquist said:

Hi Campers. I liked what Bruce Weary D.C. said about runners.

RUNNERS ARE RUNNERS OF ALL DISTANCES. I say

ENDURANCE RIDERS ARE ENDURANCE RIDERS OF ALL DISTANCES.

The way LD and Endurance are currently defined, endurance riders are
endurance riders of all distances (i.e. those distances over 50 miles)
and all riders are riders, no matter what distance they ride (even if it
is only 550 yds at a hunter show).

I totally agree, everybody at an AERC ride (both those that ride the
endurance ride and those that ride the LD ride) should be called riders,
that is, after all, what they are doing. However, riders should not be
called endurance riders until they ride an endurance ride (50 miles or
more). just as runners are not called marathoners until they run a
marathon.

But then, I haven't seen ANYBODY suggest that people who ride LD rides
shouldn't be called riders.

p.s. Since the oft repeated mantra of the handful of people who
complain that there aren't enough awards for LD riders and LD riders
aren't getting enough respect is that "LD is the fastest growing aspect
of the organization," I find it ironic that these same people don't
understand that the fact that it is the fastest growing aspect of the
organization suggests that the way the organization is currently
operating LD rides is very good (since it is leading to such healthy
growth). And a perfectly reasonable response to those who think it
should be done differently would be, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

It is entirely possible that by mucking about with the way LD is
currently defined, rewarded, etc. MIGHT actually lower its appeal and
retard its growth. :)
