Re: [RC] Returning to competition after foaling - Barbara McCrary

I started conditioning a mare several years ago.  One day I had ridden her lightly for about a mile, then started trotting up a hill.  She locked up solid.  We walked her gently home, and she seemed to be OK.  I called a vet and asked why this had happened.  He said, 1) she was female, and 2) she was young (6 years old).  I never had her do that again, but once was enough to scare me thoroughly.

I've never had my mare tie up.  Knock on wood.  But then I have never experience a horse that has tied up.  So what do I know.

What about tying up? I have heard that mares tie up more than geldings. (don't flame me....just a rumor I hear around camp....)
