Re: [RC] [RC] [RC] Feeding Questions - Jena Williams

Black oil sunflower seeds (BOSS) are up to 40% fat.  I started feeding it to put weight on a new horse we had, and keep weight on a geriatric horse.  I do not have a refrigerator in my barn for keeping corn oil, and it is expensive anyway.  BOSS is a good grain substitute that is low in the sugars that make them "high", but lots of fat for extra calories to keep weight on hard keepers.  I am able to buy 25# bags at Wal-Mart for $8.

Now that all my horses are at a good weight I still feed a bit of my "grain" mix to keep them shiney and happy.  (They will shine!)

4-way is corn, oats, barley, and molassas.  Around here they call it "wet C.O.B."

PS.  I learned this on Ridecamp, thanks to Susan G.  There is lots of good stuff in the archives.

I was just wondering why you are feeding the sunflower seeds? I have never heard of that and was curious! What do you mean by 4-way?

Val,
This makes sense to me. I feed 80/20 bermuda/alfalfa pellets, beet pulp, sunflower seeds, 4-way, and sometimes flax. I do not have time to grind the sunflower seeds or flax, and have my horses set up on a once a day effort.

They get the pellets free feed. I feed the pellets because they are less mess, less waste, and easier to digest (I have an older hard keeper and 2 endurance horses)

The beet pulp is prepared one feeding in advance in summer, night before in winter. I throw my sunflower seeds, 4-way (for flavor), and flax in and let it soak with the beet pulp. I started doing this because there seemed to be alot of undigested grain in their manure, and I do not have money to be throwing it away. I saw an improvement in digestion once I started soaking it all together.
