Responsible gun owners would not do so. Out here it's very common, especially in the mountains, for folks to have a gun on their saddle or person. I wouldn't think anything of it. Since many people carry them for bears, snakes, hunting, to be able to shoot an injured horse that is suffering, etc., that would be the assumption. However, if someone truly attacked you, you might be able to defend yourself...which you have every right to do.
