RE: [RC] to Jonni -re archives and barefoot - heidi

I often wondered why people think that a shod hoof offers stone
protection when it only covers the hoof wall, not the sole or frog.
Maybe it's because the hoof is numb?

If you think that a shod hoof is numb, you ought to try doing something
painful to one. The horse will cure you of that notion in a hurry!

That said--a shod hoof gets the sole up away from the penetration of a
great many of the rocks--but not all of them. If the horse happens to hit
something that fits inside the shoe, he WILL "ouch" and he CAN bruise!
But compared to having his sole going right down on the rocks, the shod
hoof is a godsend of protection.
