Re: [RC] Yet another Panacur Purge question - heidi

I have had better luck with syringing the straight fenbenzadole, than
using paste wormers. However, I am tall, and my daughter helps. Our
method is to have a person on each side; she steadies head, and I poke
syringe in mouth (horse's head is already somethat high as they are
apalled at the whole
idea). Once I empty syringe, her job is to elevate their head until
their mouth
is higher than throat so liquid goes down. This is one process I can
say in all modesty, that we have down to a science; we are the syringing
queens!

If I remember right, you are giving about 46cc....out of a 60cc syringe.
Iguess
you could fill rest of syringe with pancake syrup to disguise it.. Karen

Being short and having to work alone much of the time, I much prefer that
they never get appalled at the idea in the first place, and never elevate
their heads. Therefore I never use a large syringe--nothing over 20 ml
(12 ml preferred)--even if it means I have to refill it a few times and
give more than one "dose". I find I can stand quietly by the side of
their head (even the green younguns), reach underneath with my right hand
to cup up over the bridge of their nose, and quietly slip the smaller
syringe into the corner of their mouth from behind and underneath (after
first sticking a finger in the corner of the mouth to get them used to the
idea that something can be stuck in there and it isn't any big deal).
I've not had a problem with them spitting it out, even if I don't elevate
their heads much--if they aren't upset, I can change the direction of the
syringe after I start the end of it into the corner of the mouth, and
actually get the stuff back in 3-4 inches.

Heidi
