RE: [RC] [RC] Anyone remember this ride? - sindy mccosker

Bob, Just curious do you think the ad would say it was sanctioned by the American Endurance Ride Conferance if it wasn't? It was a 1/4 page ad on Page 107. It says mail entry or deposit to: Valley Bank Of Nevada c/o Nevada-200.

There is also a very informative article of an interview with Kerry Ridgway D.V.M. about distance riding in this issue. When asked by WH of all the people who ride competitively what percentage would you consider good horsemen? Dr. Ridgeway answered: About 20 percent. I doubt if there would be too much more than that.

I wonder how he would have answered that question now.

Ride results for the 1977 ride year were printed in the old
Saddle Action magazine. There was no year book that year. I
checked all rides and none of what you mentioned was in
there so I doubt that it was AERC sanctioned. I vaguely
remember something way back in the recesses of my mind that
tells me it did not happen. Can't say for sure but perhaps
some other distinguishes elder will know. I know that Becky
Hart was riding then, as well as Louise Riedel.

I was looking at one of my OLD Western Horseman magazines dated February 1977. There is an ad for a 200-Mile Elapsed-Time Endurance Horse Race that had $53,500 in total prize money! Entry fee was $500, the first prize was $12,000 with prize money paid through 40th place. Best Condition would win $500. The bonus was a new 1977 Dutsun that would be given to one of the contestants BEFORE the ride.

The race started in Pahrump, Nevada on April 4, 1977 and was
a 4 1/2 day
ride with a maximum 51 miles per day. Each rider was to keep
his own time by
electronic punch clock, supervised by 4 independent judges.
It was
sanctioned by AERC and the Pahrump Valley Chamber of
Commerce and insured by
Fireman's Fund.

Does anyone remember this ride? With all the talk about
horses being over
ridden I wonder how many horses were over ridden in the
pursuit of the prize
money?
